Dr. Kathryn Kumagai Shimamura, PT, DPT, NCS, OCS, CSCS, FAAOMPT

Kathryn Kumagai Shimamura is a practicing physical therapist located in Southern California. She is board certified as a clinical specialist in both Neurology and Orthpaedics with extensive clinical experience in both neurologic and orthopaedic rehabilitation in a variety of settings ranging from acute rehabilitation to outpatient and transitional living centers. She is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

She received her BS in Health Science/Physical Therapy in 1989 from California State University Northridge. She received her MS and post-professional DPT in Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy in 2000 and 2001 respectively from the University of Southern California. She is currently an Associate Professor at Azusa Pacific University in the Department of Physical Therapy. She completed the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Orthpaedic Physical Therapy Residency in 1996 and has remained involved in the Southern California Kaiser Permanente programs as clinical faculty.

For the past decade she has taught continuing education courses on Movement Analysis, Motor Learning, Spine and Shoulder Rehabilitation as part of the curriculum for the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Movement Science Fellowship, Spine Fellowship and Manual Therapy Fellowship. She continues to be involved in the development of programs focusing on movement based therapeutic approaches and is serving as a contributing author for the APTA clinical practice guideline team responsible for establishing the CPG for Post Concussion Rehabilitation.
